Portsmouth, NH – Dr. Bruce Gomberg, of Access Sports Medicine & Orthopaedics, performed the first custom knee replacement at Portsmouth Regional Hospital. This new knee implant is custom made for each patient using innovative technology. Dr. Gomberg has been performing both total and partial knee replacements using the ConforMIS custom knees for the past year and was the first orthopaedic surgeon to perform this procedure in New Hampshire.
“I’ve regained more flexibility in my knee [with the ConforMIS knee]. I can breathe better because I’m not in pain,” said Mary Sayre, a patient of Dr. Gomberg’s. “I like the idea that I’ve got something in my knee that lasts a long time.”
The ConforMIS knee implant is created specifically for each patient using a special type of CT scan of the knee, 3-D modeling, and 3-D printing technology.
“I use the ConforMIS knee implant because patients seem to get back to their daily activities faster and their knees feel more normal than with traditional ‘off-the-shelf’ knee replacements,” said Dr. Gomberg. “Custom implants are individually sized and shaped to fit each patient’s unique knee. These patients often feel better and perform better than patients with ‘off-the-shelf’ implants.”
Dr. Gomberg specializes in joint replacement of the knee and hip, arthroscopy and fracture care. He has now performed a series of custom partial and total knee replacements. To learn more about Dr. Gomberg and his work, please visit www.accesssportsmed.com and www.partialknees.com.
