What is Occupational Therapy?
Occupational therapy is a form of specialized assistance for people of all ages that have limited abilities due to physical, medical or developmental conditions. This form of therapy can cover everything from carpal tunnel syndrome to brain injuries.
By making changes to a person’s environment, situation and skillset, occupational therapists can help patients successfully perform the daily tasks that are important to them.
An occupational therapist’s responsibilities include:
- Observing patients performing certain tasks
- Reviewing the patent’s full medical history
- Evaluating the patient’s condition and specific needs
- Creating a treatment plan with the patient’s goals in mind
- Demonstrating exercises that help relieve pain for chronic conditions
- Assessing the patient’s workplace and/or home to identify how it can be better tailored to their condition
- Educating the patient’s family and/or employer on ways to better accommodate their condition
