Back in August, Jeffrey Smith, MD, joined our team following the culmination of his residency at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center.

Dr. Smith is a board-certified physician specializing in evaluating and managing back pain, non-operative spine care, and musculoskeletal medicine. His areas of expertise include:

  • Musculoskeletal injuries of the spine, shoulder, hip, and knee
  • Fluoroscopic and ultrasound-guided interventional procedures of the extremities and the spine
  • Electrodiagnostic medicine, including EMGs and diagnostic as well as therapeutic nerve blocks for nerve injury

When it comes to working with patients, his focus is doing whatever he can to restore function and quality of life for them.

“It’s good satisfaction for me to help someone get back to their normal activities and doing what they love to do,” said Dr. Smith. “The way I approach my practice is to just listen to patients and focus on what they enjoy and what their functional goals are. I try to base the approach around that. I aim to accomplish this with a treatment plan that will meet their needs with the consideration of whatever their beliefs or approach to medicine may be as well.”

This is what makes Dr. Smith the perfect fit here at Access Sports Medicine. He’s a great listener and takes great pride in fully understanding what’s going on with his patients to find the right treatments and interventions for their unique situations. This, after all, is what our work is all about: working closely with you to figure out the best approach to get you back in the game as quickly and safely as possible.

“I take a more conservative approach than others in my field. I’m much more inclined to let physical therapy and some medication do the trick and don’t jump as fast to certain interventions. I try to take an approach to each patient’s functional level and get them to wherever their goals may be.”

We are thrilled to add his expertise to the team here at Access Sports Medicine and are excited to watch him grow as a provider and invaluable resource at our practice.

“I appreciate the people I work with. They’re fantastic and extremely knowledgeable. I appreciate having a good mix of patients that, in general, are fairly active and want to remain active. They usually have some interest in sports, or they are in a line of work that is very demanding. It makes it easier to treat patients who have a certain higher activity level and are willing to put in the work to reach whatever their goals may be, who set high goals for themselves, and who will work hard to achieve those goals and allow me to help them along the way.”
